FCCHouston (Families with Children from China) is a all volunteer non-profit organization in Houston which provides social, cultural and educational support for families who have adopted or plan to adopt children from China and for children adopted from China. We were asked a while back if we would like to donate some prints of our work towards a silent auction event which was part of a Chinese New Years celebration for the kids. Over the years, we have fallen in love with the beautiful land of China, its people, and its culture. We highly appreciate what this organization represents and what it does for the children adopted from China. We were happy to donate a couple of giclee prints of the award winning shots from the National Geographic contest both taken in China. We very much enjoyed meeting the different people in the organization, the parents, the kids, and and everyone involved in making such a wonderful event possible. We hope that through our photos we can continue to share our stories and images of the beautiful land of China. A special thank you to David Godwin who is the one who invited us to be a part of this great event.

The Shanghai Resotaration Project is the creation of Dave Liang, a brilliant musician out of New York. He has created a unique fusion of modern electronic and hip-hop with classical Chinese instruments. Having traveled all over China, we jumped at the opportunity to have our photography to be affiliated with the Shanghai Restoration Project. Over the years as we travel more around China and Shanghai, and as Shanghai Restoration Project grows, we continue to provide creative and unique views of the wonderous city of Shanghai.

Recently, Dave launched a new website at http://shanghairestorationproject.com – check out the music, videos, find show dates, see some of our unseen Shanghai shots, and buy some cool posters! Below are two photos shot by Tomas in Shanghai, 2009 available as SRP posters through imagekind.

After the National Geographic award was announced, the Houstonian Lite Health Club in Downtown Houston, contacted us and together we organized an exclusive photo exhibit of 4EyesPhoto images in December 2009. Altogether we selected about 40 images which were printed on giclee canvas at Houston Photo Imaging, which did a fantastic job. It was very exciting for us because it was the first time seeing large prints of our work instead of just on the computer screen or a small print. Thank you to everyone who came out, we met some new friends and had a great time visiting with everyone. In all it was a great success and look forward to doing many more exhibits. A special thank you to Vaughn Marxhausen and Kathryn Jacobs Heller of the Houstonian Lite who were in charge of organzing of the whole exhibit, they did a great job!

A friend of mine had told me about the National Geographic Ultimate Photo Contest, after I checked out the site, I got excited and ended up entering 5 out of the 6 categories they had available. I had almost forgot about the contest when I received an email later letting me know that I had made the finalist in two of the categories. These are the two shots that made it, “Heart of a Lion” and “Once Upon a Time”:

It only seemed like a short time after that they announced my submission of “Heart of a Lion” in the Inspiration/Keep-going category as the Grand Prize Winner, and the rest is history. The other finalist “Once Upon a Time” won First Place in the People & Cultures cateogry. To win this contest and be published in the pages of National Geographic has truly been the honor of a lifetime and i am humbled by the whole experience.

Shortly after the awards were announced, Jim Richardson of Natioal Geographic flew down to spend a couple of days in Houston. We did some radio, newspaper, and even some tv interviews with ABC13 and FOX26, both local channels in Houston. It was a great opportunity for us to get to know Jim and have an insight into the concepts and thought process behind his own photos.

So, when May rolls around I’ll be goin to the Galapagos Islands with Tomas on a 10-day trip on the National Geographic Endeavor. Stay posted for more news as we prep to go in the coming months
