A friend of mine had told me about the National Geographic Ultimate Photo Contest, after I checked out the site, I got excited and ended up entering 5 out of the 6 categories they had available. I had almost forgot about the contest when I received an email later letting me know that I had made the finalist in two of the categories. These are the two shots that made it, “Heart of a Lion” and “Once Upon a Time”:It only seemed like a short time after that they announced my submission of “Heart of a Lion” in the Inspiration/Keep-going category as the Grand Prize Winner, and the rest is history. The other finalist “Once Upon a Time” won First Place in the People & Cultures cateogry. To win this contest and be published in the pages of National Geographic has truly been the honor of a lifetime and i am humbled by the whole experience. Shortly after the awards were announced, Jim Richardson of Natioal Geographic flew down to spend a couple of days in Houston. We did some radio, newspaper, and even some tv interviews with ABC13 and FOX26, both local channels in Houston. It was a great opportunity for us to get to know Jim and have an insight into the concepts and thought process behind his own photos.
So, when May rolls around I’ll be goin to the Galapagos Islands with Tomas on a 10-day trip on the National Geographic Endeavor. Stay posted for more news as we prep to go in the coming months
